Frame relay is a telecommunication service designed for cost-efficient data transmission between local area networks and between end-points in a wide area network.The technology uses the data link layer along with a packet switching protocol that transmits “frames” of data over digital lines at high speeds and more efficiently than point-to-point services.

The technology arose as a solution to the need for affordable and efficient connectivity between many sites of a common business. The network provides a permanent virtual connection utilizing the data lines owned by a service provider. It is quite popular for LAN to LAN connections because it is relatively inexpensive. The efficiency comes from the fact that frame relay networks perform less rigorous error correction than previous packet switching standards. When an error is detected in a frame, the data is simply dropped. The end points are responsible for detecting and retransmitting dropped frames. In addition, the incedence of error is extraordinarily small which further increases the efficiency of the technology.
